Probably the first people worldwide and independently of each other made something from flexible twigs in which you could carry or store things: baskets. Baskets existed in prehistoric times, baskets still exist today. Basket weaver, basket maker or basketer is an ancient craft that is mainly practiced and demonstrated as a hobby in the Western world.
In the past, baskets were a necessary utensil in the home, agriculture, fishing and industry. Nowadays, they are often decorative. Only in developing countries does it retain its original function. The former Institute for the Blind in Grave had, among other things, a training course for basket makers. In the village, the basket maker had no existence, often this was an additional income of, for example, a day laborer. After the Second World War, the basket maker disappeared, the baskets have remained.
