    Potato day

A day full of experience, taste, and tradition, with the potato in the starring role! Come to Museum Village De Locht and enjoy a fun day full of activities, with music and, of course, delicious food. As you stroll around, the cheerful music of Bigband Noord-Limburg creates a pleasant atmosphere.

Step back in time and experience how important the potato has always been. Watch the impressive demonstrations of potato sorting and harvesting machines. See with your own eyes how the harvest was dug up and stored in the past. Discover the surprising richness of potato varieties.

Children can go out into the field themselves to harvest potatoes, just like their grandparents used to do. Looking for a unique shopping experience? Try your luck at the auction clock. Go home with your chosen potatoes—firm or floury? Or with vegetables, each with its own flavor and use.

Gourmets will be well catered for. At Het Steeltje, we serve tasty potato dishes. We bake riefkook, delicious potato pancakes made according to a traditional recipe, a regional specialty. And what is a potato day without fries? Enjoy golden, freshly fried fries.

The potato, the foundation of the meal for centuries. From simple working-class fare and mashed potatoes to a beloved delicacy: the potato holds a special place in our history and on our plate. Today, we are pleased to put this versatile crop in the spotlight, a day full of nostalgia, craftsmanship, tasting, and enjoyment.

Come to De Locht, experience and celebrate the potato!

  • Aardappelmannetjes

    Making potato men

We are going to make something with potatoes, because today is Potato Day. Potato men! That is a fun craft activity. You will need a number of supplies for it, such as markers, skewers, toothpicks, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, bottle caps, beads, scraps of felt or wool, and of course, potatoes.

Pick a potato that seems suitable to you—large, small, thick, or thin—and clean it thoroughly. Start decorating, or first draw a nose or mouth on it with a marker. Do you want to give the little man arms and legs? You can do this with pipe cleaners or pieces of potato secured with toothpicks.

Give him a hat or a moustache, let your imagination run wild. Make something beautiful out of him. Don’t know what to make? Our volunteers are happy to help you get started. We will lay out the materials you need. Just pick them out! And of course, you can take the potato man home with you.

  • Flax and Wool day

Today we focus all our attention on the processing of flax and wool. How does wool felt? Why are linen and woolen fabrics so valuable? What is retting, hackling, rotting, and breaking? In Museum Village de Locht, you will find answers to all these questions, and undoubtedly many more, today: from flax to linen, from fleece to thread.

There is so much to see and do: an interesting lecture given by Arjan Lichtenbarg from the “Vlasoven”. We will be felting soaps with the children. How do you do that? Go and see for yourself. Try a flaxseed pancake. The bakers in the baking house are baking special products with flaxseed. Enjoy the cheerful singing of the Happy Sound Ladies’ Choir from Merselo.

A number of spinners will demonstrate how to spin wool or linen. How do you weave a cloth from that yarn? How do you dye wool? Interested in needlework? We are demonstrating various needlework techniques today. Perhaps you would like to try something yourself? That is all possible. In addition, there are demonstrations of various other traditional crafts.

Throughout the centuries, flax and wool have played an important role in the history of this region. Therefore, we also pay close attention to the processing of flax and wool in our regular collection. In September, a spinning and felting course begins at De Locht, in collaboration with the Hobby Gilde. For information, see Hobby Gilde.

Come to De Locht and let yourself be surprised today!
